Children can and do love science – that is what we in Discovery Camps (DVC) earnestly believe in. Our activities, projects, visits and lessons are developed to help children love science. It is an established fact that when children love a subject, they will do excellently in it.
Discovery Camps had its humble beginnings in 1992 as a fun project that I started with a few teacher friends, taking 30 children on visits and through science activities and simple projects, helped the kids understand what science was all about. The next holidays, parents rang and asked for more such sessions and thus was born DVC.
I am a Scientist of more than 40 years’ experience, who loves science, and have a passion to share this love with children. Our programs, which are continually upgraded, involve the use of interactive hands-on science methods. Emphasis is on children to do, to think, to understand and be creative. Examples of some topics which light up the children’s eyes include: Flight, Life Sciences, Forensic and Detective Sciences. Our one-week programs consist of experiments, projects, activities, visits and play.
Grouping and Programs
Our camps are conducted over 4 days, 9am to 5pm each week. We have programs suitable for children from ages 7 to 12: “S-series” for P1s, “A-series” for P2s & P3s and “B-series” for P4s, P5s & P6s. Our programs are designed based on themes that the children can relate to in their everyday experiences and what they learn in school. The rigour of our activities and projects will guide the children to inquire, predict, experiment, observe and record, analyse and infer – skills needed for their learning of Science and application to higher order thinking questions.
The interactive and participative methods and approaches have been used since 1992 in our Discovery Camps and have since been incorporated into the new Science syllabi of Primary and Secondary Schools in Singapore. We like to think it all began with us.
We have a wide repertoire of programs which allows campers to attend several sessions within one year. Discovery Campers love being at DVC and we have many repeat campers each time and each year.
Our November/December 2019 Camps will be conducted at Raffles Girls’ Primary School (Main Campus) and Geylang Methodist Secondary School (East Campus). Our classes are taught by DVC trained instructors assisted by Science trained camp leaders.
Discovery Camps is all about kids learning SCIENCE in a FUN and ENJOYABLE way and is in line with the Primary Science framework to look into Science as an Inquiry.
We look forward to interacting with your kids at our forthcoming camps.
